"My entire life I have always loved visual arts. As a child I was constantly drawing, painting or arranging colorful leaves outside in the garden. It was a very natural path for me to pursue a career in the Arts. I especially love working with children and combining my two passions was an easy choice. Working in Art Education is very fulfilling. The most rewarding aspect of my career is seeing the joy that art can bring to a child's life. I have had students first enter the art room with insecurities and leave with renewed confidence in themselves and their artistic abilities.
One of the more difficult aspects of my job as an elementary art teacher is the occasional lack of support from administration. It took a few years for me to find a school and community that appreciates and advocates for the arts as much as I do. I am so glad to be at my current school because the support from teachers, parents and leaders is amazing!
The advice that I would give to individuals interested in entering education would be to develop a love of learning. As a teacher, we have the great opportunity to learn from our own students. I always keep an open mind and let my student's ideas and creativity teach me something new.
I receive notes and drawings from my art students all the time and I keep every single one. I once received a note from a graduating student who wrote, "Thank you Mrs. Hertz for teaching me art. You did everything right." This kind note was so sweet that it touched my heart. I have had so many wonderful experiences with my students and I look forward to many more as I continue my career. "
