From make believe, to living the dream....Read Sherika's Story.
"I never imagined myself being in any other profession than teaching. Teaching has been my passion from a young age. My inspiration to become a teacher stemmed from my love of teaching today's youth to be productive, well-respected citizens. As a child, I often pretended I was leading a classroom with my stuffed animals. However, this fictitious game of playing “teacher” drastically changed when I actually got a job offer to teach in a 2nd-grade general ed classroom. In the middle of my 2nd year of teaching, COVID-19 hit us, and just as I was getting used to teaching in a physical space, I had to adjust my teaching skills and transfer it to a remote space. It wasn’t the easiest task, but I pushed through and knew I couldn’t give up because my students were depending on me to continue feeding their brains. To me, teaching isn't as much about money as it is about making a difference in the lives of today's youth. I knew it would be a full-time commitment and that I would encounter many challenges, but I also knew the positives would always outweigh the challenges I might face. I always wanted a job that I was excited to get up in the morning to go to, and being a teacher has certainly met those expectations. I want to tell you today that you can do or even adjust to anything you put your mind to. It won’t be easy, but it’ll be worth it. "
